Solicitation of Public Opinion and Feedback on the Draft Amended Wildlife Act

The Forest Department has developed a proposed amended version of the Wildlife Act 1974.  This amended version takes into account a number of significant changes in the area of wildlife and biodiversity management since the original Act was approved.  The amended version has been prepared with the technical support of lawyers from the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyer’s Association through the Nishorgo Support Project.

Some of the salient changes include the following:

Improvement and extension of definitions of key terms
Refinement of the authorities of Forest Department officers
Proposal of language concerning collaborative management of Protected Areas;
Proposal of language concerning Community Conserved Areas (CCA);
Updating of CITES species lists in the Schedules.

As part of the process of amending the Act, the Forest Department solicits and welcomes the suggestions and feedback of citizens of Bangladesh.  The Department is working to solicit such feedback on the draft Act in a number of ways.  A public session is to be organized on April 30th at the Forest Department to which an estimated 150 stakeholders will be invited to learn about and review the draft Act and to voice and register their comments.  At this session, the Department will ensure that a detailed transcript of comments will be compiled as part of a summary report on “Public Consultations on the Amended Wildlife Act 1974”.

Additionally, the Department is making the draft amended Act available in full on its "http://www.nishorgo.org" website. Visitors are welcome to download the full English version of the Act in a version that compares the previous and amended versions.  Visitors may also download the initial draft Bangla version, although users should know that this Bangla version is only a draft, and will later be replaced as necessary by an official translation. You may also review the amended Schedules for the Act here.

Subsequent to the 30th April meeting and discussion at the Forest Department, smaller sessions are being organized with specific stakeholder groups during the month of May.
